Basic research is carried out on Campus Berlin-Buch in two research institutes: the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC) Berlin-Buch and the Research Institute for Molecular Pharmacology (FMP).

The Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC) Berlin-Buch undertakes modern biomedical and clinical research. The scientists of the MDC utilize molecular-biological and gene-technological methods in order to analyze complex diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular and nervous disorders, and building on that, to develop scientifically-based methods of diagnosis, therapy and prevention. They work closely with physicians in the two specialist clinics on the Campus Berlin-Buch, the Robert Rössle Clinic for Tumor Diseases and the Franz Volhard Clinic for Cardiovascular Diseases. The MDC is one of 15 institutions of the Hermann von Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers (HGF).

The Leibniz Institut for Molecular Pharmacology (FMP) makes scientific contributions in the first preliminary stages of drug development. The FMP's main research areas are the elucidation of the structure, function and the interactions of proteins as well as the identification of small molecules (agents), which bind to the investigated proteins, thus evoking biological effects. The newly identified agents provide valuable tools for research. At the same time new drugs can be derived from them. With its particular focus, the FMP aids in bringing together pharmacological basic research and the development of new drugs. The FMP has many cooperation agreements with national and international research institutes and with industry. Due to five joint chairs, participation in teaching and diverse cooperations, e.g. within the scope of association research projects, it is closely affiliated with the universities in Berlin.

In 1992 the FMP evolved out of the Institute for Material Research of the Academy of Sciences of the former East Germany. It is a member of the Leibniz Association. Along with seven additional Berlin Leibniz Institutes it is administratively integrated into the Berlin Research Association.
